About Huerta Urbana: Huerta Urbana ("Huerta") is an urban farm located in the Globeville, Elyria-Swansea (GES) neighborhoods of northeast Denver. GES is known as both a food swamp and a food desert, as the neighborhoods lack access to healthy food options. Huerta Urbana is home to a hive of bees, a flock of chickens, and fresh produce grown with organic farming practices. Farm with us on most Thursdays from June to October to prepare for our weekly Friday farmer's market. The Huerta Urbana Farmer's Market operates on a pay-what-you-can model, allowing all families to secure fresh and locally-grown produce at a price that works for them.
Training and Tasks: Join the Huerta team on Thursdays from 10 AM - 12 PM during the market season to help harvest produce, weed, trellis plants, and other tasks as assigned. Volunteers will be trained and supervised by either Focus Points' staff or participants in our urban agriculture training program.
Please note, Huerta is a working farm. Volunteers must be comfortable being exposed to dirt, farm chemicals, persistent sun, heat, and insects.
Dress Code: Focus Points is a family resource center, so we ask that volunteers come prepared with comfortable and appropriate clothing and closed-toe shoes. The dress code for the farm is long-sleeve shirts, long pants, and closed-toe shoes. Please bring any items you may need for your experience including a water bottle, snacks, and sunscreen.
