In 2000, the (then named) Sunnyside Bluegrass Festival began in the backyard of a neighborhood couple who wanted to have a free music festival for their friends and neighbors. It started with 2 bands, 2 kegs, 50 people and about 20 dogs. The next year, a monsoon rolled off of the mountains and even though it was cold and rainy, the event grew in both attendance and beer consumption.
The event continued on, though expensive permits and paperwork were starting to pose a barrier to keeping the event entirely free. That is until 2007 when some Sunnyside neighbors applied for two small grants to revive the festival. Together with a handful of friends, they re-invigorated the event with the help of local musicians and businesses. Now in its 22nd year, The Sunnyside Music Festival has become a mainstay for the Northwest Denver Neighborhood, taking over Chaffee Park the Saturday after Labor Day each year.
Since 2016, we have raised enough money through the festival to distribute small grants to local schools, nonprofits, and arts organizations working to make music accessible and fun for all youth. Please join us in our vision of giving back to our community and spreading unity through music.
What We Do
The Sunnyside Music Festival is a volunteer-run nonprofit organization that builds community through a free, family-friendly music festival. Our annual event supports local bands, businesses, artisans, and youth organizations through year-round programming.
