Volunteer: Housing Set-Up Volunteer

Once we know a family or individual will be served by our office we work to secure their housing and ensure that their home is set up and ready to welcome them upon their arrival. We rely on volunteers and various community groups to help with housing set-ups.    Volunteers will help set up a home for a newly-arriving refugee family or individual. Volunteers will be added to an on-call list and receive 1-3 emails per week. Volunteers respond to the opportunities that work best for their schedule.

Location: Varies throughout the Denver/Aurora-metro area.

Time Commitment:

On-call/as needed. (volunteers choose only the opportunities that fit with their schedules) Housing set-ups typically take place Monday-Friday during normal business hours.  Due to the nature of the housing market and short notice we receive before families arrive, it is often difficult to schedule housing set-ups more than a few days in advance.  Last-minute emails requesting volunteers is the norm. A typical housing set-up takes approximately 2-4 hours.

Duties:

Moving furniture, and other household items into an apartment or house Putting together furniture (IKEA bed frames, for example) Washing and putting dishes away Setting up other household items so they are ready to go upon client arrival

This position can be done as a one-day volunteer opportunity and does not require individuals to go through our full onboarding list. E-mail IRCDenver.Volunteer@Rescue.org to get involved.

Building Research Volunteers

Research Volunteers research the history of buildings for which we have received tips or that have been identified through field survey as potentially significant. Research entails determining who designed, built, and owned or lived in a building over time, and whether any significant events have occurred there. Because most research is performed either online or at the Denver Public Library, research volunteers are free to work whenever they’d like. Research volunteers receive training on what they need to know before they are assigned research.

Volunteer: Change a Child's Story- become a Court Appointed Special Advocate!

Advocate for the best interest of a child experiencing abuse, neglect or barriers to a quality education. Help make a difference and change the course of a child’s life in your community by becoming a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA). Volunteers are people just like you; compassionate, self-motivated community individuals.

CASA has two avenues for you to advocate for children in your community.

In Dependency and Neglect Cases, the family is in court due to their actions and the risk it presents to the well-being of the child. The judge appoints CASA to the case and the Program Coordinator appoints a volunteer. The advocate will meet with the child and the parent(s)/care giver to gain knowledge of the child and their life situation. They submit reports to the judge, attend court, and speak on behalf of the child for their best interests to be in a safe and permanent home.

Truancy is a symptom of something occurring in a child’s life. School attendance is mandated by law within the State of Colorado. When the school has been unsuccessful at correcting attendance the Judge appoints a Truancy CASA to assist both the courts and the families to acquire school attendance and school success.

Volunteer: Host a Kicks for Kids Drive

At Clothes To Kids of Denver, we give away over 12,000 pairs of shoes in a year! We can't do this without strong community support. A Kicks For Kids shoe drive is a great fit for businesses, schools, scout troops, sports teams, clubs, religious communities and service organizations wanting to make a BIG difference! Individuals are welcome to host one too with friends, neighbors, family or anyone else in your circle.

We accept many styles of shoes but no formal wear or flip flops. Shoe donations don't need to be new but do need to be in great condition, clean and ready to wear. If the soles are worn bare or there are holes or are dirty, please find another home for them. We accept shoe sizes from Youth 8 through adult size 17.

We have more details to share but here are the highlights...

1. Pick a timeframe that works for you.

2. Promote your drive by educating the community about what we do and why we need their help.

3. Create appealing collection bins that are well labeled and easily accessible.

4. Keep a tally of what you are collecting. It is fun to report back to your donors how much you have collected.

5. Make sure your donations meet our needs by removing items that are poor quality or not suitable for CTKD and direct them somewhere else.

6. Schedule a drop off time for your donations and deliver them to the CTKD store.

Please contact us at Volunteer@clothestokidsdenver.org for more details.

Volunteer: Become a Community Collection Bin Champion

About the Bin Program

At CTKD, we give free school clothes to students in need or in crisis. We have 30 collection bins placed across the metro area that the community uses to help us fill our boutique with great quality clothing. Hosting a Community Collection Bin is an ongoing opportunity to pass along gently used clothing and give the items directly to someone who really needs them. Donated clothing items are turned around quickly and often go home with a family within a few days of being donated.

At our boutique, we provide a warm and welcoming, retail-like setting where students can select the wardrobe pieces that meet their needs. Each student receives a wardrobe that is a week's worth of school clothes - 21 pieces - and it is all FREE. In a year, we give away over 10,000 wardrobes to students around the Denver Metro area. We cannot do this work without strong community support so thank you for helping make this happen!

Bin Champion Role

To support our mission on an ongoing basis, individuals or groups can sponsor a bin at their location. Hosting a bin comes with some responsibilities that are great fit for schools, civic organizations and businesses. We ask the volunteers serving as Bin Champions to...

Promote the bin in your community or business newsletter, social media outlets or any other communication channels.  You will receive regular updates from CTKD about our greatest needs and current events. Share our Donation Guidelines so your donors give items suitable for our purposes.

Advocate for CTKD in your community. Educate everyone - customers, families, participants, members - about our mission with the goal of collecting as much high-quality clothing as possible. As a bonus, you also get the word out that we are here to help families who may need us.

Collect clothing regularly by making the bin easily accessible. Our boutique stocks a wide selection of stylish, high quality, gently used clothing so all clothing donations need to be in great condition, current styles appealing to kids and teens, clean and ready to wear.

Deliver your donations to the CTKD store. Empty the bin as often as necessary but at least once a month.

Bin Dimensions & Placement

The dimensions of the bin are 48" tall and 24" square. It is on wheels and easy to move. It is made of metal but is not weatherproof and intended for indoor use. There may be some cases when it can be outdoors if it is well protected from the elements and secure. These are exceptions. The bin can be placed for a period of a minimum of 3 months up to 12 months or more. We will work with you to determine what the best time frame is.

Volunteer: CRC Statewide Data Analyst VISTA (GrantCorps)

Community Resource Center (CRC), a Denver based nonprofit, supports, strengthens, and galvanizes change-makers across the nonprofit ecosystem, working together to create a more equitable Colorado. As an innovator and statewide convener, CRC listens to partners’ challenges and considers new ways to provide support and access to tools most needed by organizations throughout the state. A significant and ongoing challenge faced by small, rural-based, and BIPOC-led and serving nonprofits is access to grant funding. Often, smaller organizations lack the staff capacity to conduct research for, write, and develop systems for management and reporting on grants. The GrantCorps VISTA will combat this barrier by engaging with rural nonprofits addressing poverty and building their capacity through fund development and grant writing. They will gain valuable insight and experience in fund development by initiating grant research, grant proposal and report preparation, resource mapping, and creation of grant and budget tracking tools. This second-year VISTA will continue compiling records throughout their term of service to establish best practices for this new model of capacity building and create tools to regularly evaluate success. They will create an implementation plan and provide recommendations for subsequent VISTA member(s) for improvements to increase success. Volunteer: Education Elevated Board Opening for Treasurer

Education Elevated strongly believes that where a child lives or their economic status should not impact their ability to earn an education to be better able to support their family and community.

Since its founding in 2008, Education Elevated has focused its efforts on providing education for the children of the Chyangba in Northeast Nepal. Chyangba is a very small, remote village that is home to many of the Sherpa people who provide support for international trekkers undertaking Mt. Everest. However, most Sherpa families continue to live in abject poverty.

Education Elevated built its first public schoolhouse in Chyangba in 2014. Boys were allowed to walk up to 2-3 hours/day to attend school; girls in outlying areas were not. Sadly, the new school was destroyed during the historic earthquake of 2015 but was rebuilt the following year using earthquake-resistant methods.

Along with the new school, Education Elevated created hostel-style accommodations for 24 girls between the ages of five and ten who live too far to walk to school every day. Education Elevated provides sponsorships for the girls to cover the cost of their education, room, and board for 10 months.

Education Elevated also supports both boys and girls by providing uniforms which are a requirement of the Government of Nepal to attend public school, as well as other needed educational items such as school supplies and teacher uniforms.

For more information on the organization’s history and activities, please go to Education Elevated’s website at www.educationelevated.org.

Our Board supports the work of Education Elevated in improving access to education and provides mission-based leadership and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations are led by Education Elevated’s chief executive officer (CEO), the Board-CEO relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected.

Specific Board Member responsibilities include:

A.  Leadership, governance, and oversight including serving as a trusted advisor to the CEO as s/he develops and implements Education Elevated’s strategic plan and participating on committees, task forces and/or taking on special assignments.

B.  Fundraising including supporting the annual garden concert fundraiser and making an annual contribution that is commensurate with their capacity.

This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual passionate about Education Elevated’s mission of education for all and who either has a track record of board leadership or a strong desire to get involved. Selected Board Members will have a variety of skills and experience in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector to help grow the reach and impact of the organization. His/her accomplishments and networks will allow him/her to attract other well-qualified, high-performing Board Members.

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

   Professional experience and/or significant executive leadership accomplishments in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector

   A commitment to and understanding of Education Elevated’s education for all philosophy, preferably based on experience

   Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals

   Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of Education Elevated’s beneficiaries

Service on Education Elevated’s Board of Directors is without remuneration, except for administrative support, travel, and accommodation costs in relation to Board Members’ duties.

They are assigned to work with youth at least one day a week; elementary and middle school assignments are typically after school from approximately 3-6 pm during the fall and spring semesters. Summer semester hours vary between 10 am and 3 pm.

Volunteers who are assigned to high school cohorts for 3 hour increments between 10 am and 3 pm (Boulder sites) and from 3:30-6 pm (Longmont and Carbon Valley/Frederick sites) during the fall and spring semesters. Summer semester focuses primarily on credit recovery from 10 am-3 pm.

Learning Partners/Tutors support a cohort of students under the direct supervision of the Program Director and their team with academic tutoring and SEL (social-emotional learning). The Program Director can ask Learning Partners/Tutors to provide one-on-one support to an assigned student, or a small group of students, if/when they feel the volunteer is ready. Depending on the program site and students’ needs, support is provided virtual/online and/or hybrid. All volunteers are expected to act as positive and stable role models for Dreamer Scholars.

Our curriculum, Confidence and Connections, is best delivered twice (2x) per week, in 90-minute-long sessions, with at least one day in between.

If you are interested in teaching and are available twice a week, join us!
