Volunteer: Good Neighbors Volunteer Opportunity

The Good Neighbors program offers one-on-one support for residents. Volunteers are paired with a resident to assist with tasks like organizing, completing forms or paperwork, handling small household chores, or simply visiting and providing companionship.

Volunteers will need to complete and pass a background check. Once that step is complete, matches will be made based on available skills of volunteers and needs of residents aligning, along with taking the geographic location of both individuals into consideration.

From there, a "meet and greet" will be scheduled to ensure both individuals have a chance to meet and ask questions of one another to determine if it will be a good fit. When both individuals agree to moving forward, that's when a match is made.

To get started, click "Sign Up" in VolunteerHub, and you will receive instructions on how to proceed with the background check process.

Volunteer: Dream Centers Mary's Home Child Watch

At Mary’s Home, we offer intentional support and resources to our resident families in order to help meet any area of need they may be experiencing. The residents are occasionally invited and encouraged to attend events that are outside typical business hours, resulting in the need for child watch support during some evenings and weekend hours. These events may include going to a workshop for personal or vocational development, attending a Mary’s Home Alumni Brunch on a Saturday, or even having an evening out with other Mary’s Home mothers to steward community. These are rare opportunities for our resident mothers to practice self-care and be more involved in healthy community. Mary’s Home is building a Child Watch Team so the residents have the freedom to engage in these meaningful events. The Child Watch Volunteers are responsible to provide dependable, safe, secure, and nurturing care to the resident and alumni children. This is a wonderful opportunity for those who love engaging with children to directly care for and lovingly interact with the children.

Volunteer: Virtual Volunteering with Story Love

Tens of thousands of kids send us their original stories every year. While we cannot adapt them all, we remain committed to ensuring that we read and respond to every single story we receive because we believe that when a caring adult tells a child that their words and ideas matter, that child will believe them.  We are deeply grateful to be able to engage thousands of volunteers to provide personalized notes that compliment each author’s creativity and encourage their future writing. This endeavor has been recognized with the Anthem Award and Shorty Impact honors, and is powered by major corporations and their volunteer programs like Amazon, NBCUniversal, Salesforce, and Bloomberg, to name only a few.

During an hour-long Story Love event, anywhere from 5-500 volunteers come together – on Zoom or in person – to read stories written by kids and write notes of encouragement. With as little as 2 weeks’ notice, we can set up an event for your team and take care of everything.

Event types include:

• The Happy Hour - meaningful time for your team to gather, laugh, and make a difference. With this option, you provide a list of volunteers who will each have their own set of stories to read and be encouraged to share delightful details with the group.

• The Team Builder - a unique team-building event where participants work in pairs or small groups to read and respond to stories together, building camaraderie and connection in an experience unlike any other.

• DIY - colleagues participate on their own time with live or recorded instructions (15-20 minutes in length) and access stories remotely for up to one week.

Volunteer: Meal Sponsorship

The Gathering Place provides low-barrier, trauma-informed care to women, gender-diverse people, and children facing homelessness and instability. We address the root causes of poverty, marginalization, and oppression, offering comprehensive services that guide our members from crisis to stability. With access to basic needs like food, shelter, and clothing, as well as long-term support such as housing assistance and mental health care, we empower individuals to rebuild their lives—all at no cost to those we serve.

Meal Sponsorship offers a chance to provide a direct service to our members, while also helping The Gathering Place offset our meal program budget costs. Groups agree to fund, prepare, and serve breakfast or lunch to our members. All ingredients are conveniently ready upon a group's arrival, and meal preparations are guided by our Food Program staff.

Breakfast – 3-6 volunteers needed from 7:00am-11:00am and a $1,250 donation, Monday through Friday.
Lunch – 3-6 volunteers needed from 9:00am-2:00pm and a $1,500 donation on a Monday, Wednesday, or Thursday.
Your donation covers all the costs associated with that meal period, including a fully operating kitchen, equipment, and overhead.

All volunteers must be 18+. No experience required.

We believe in the strength of community. Our core values—empowerment, inclusivity, and hope—are at the heart of everything we do. We create a safe, welcoming space where everyone is treated with respect, trust, and unconditional acceptance. Thank you for your support!

Volunteer: Build Connections between Little Free Library and Independent Booksellers in Your Area

As a part of our mission to build community and increase book access, we’ve begun connecting stewards with their local booksellers through the LFL-Friendly Bookseller’s Directory. A crucial piece of this project is to reach out and ask booksellers to offer benefits to stewards, such as discounts, book donations, or event space discounts for meetups. We need your help to share information with booksellers about how they can support their local LFL stewards!

How to get started: Sign up in our volunteer hub. If it's your first time volunteering with Team LFL, you will be asked to create an account in our volunteer hub. After you register, you will be instructed to compile a list of local booksellers you’d like to visit and submit it to us. After we receive your list, we will send you a packet of materials to distribute while you’re visiting the booksellers .

Purpose: By helping connect Little Free Library stewards to local booksellers, you are helping to build community, inspire readers, and expand book access.

Responsibilities:

Visit local booksellers (5 minimum, but can visit as many as you'd like) to drop off information packet on the bookseller’s directory

Be polite and courteous when visiting the bookseller - wait in line to speak to a staff member, don’t be pushy, encourage them to review the information and contact LFL with any questions.

Create a list of local booksellers that you plan to visit.

Check the existing map to see which booksellers are already listed - you don’t need to go to any that are already listed!

Use booksellers’ associations (MIBA, CALIBA, etc.) to find booksellers near you (if you don’t already know them!)

Visit bookstores, use the provided Excel template to record who you’ve visited, and submit sheet to us via Givepulse.

As an incentive for completing this volunteer opportunity, you will be entered in a giveaway to receive a $50 gift card to the local bookseller of your choice.

Record your impact using Givepulse.

Time Required: A typical visit to a bookseller lasts about five to ten minutes, plus travel to and from, as well as time spent beforehand to research local booksellers.

Training & Resources Available: We will help you get to know our organization and share tips to find local booksellers near you.

Qualifications:

Already a part of the Little Free Library network - either an LFL steward or Team LFL volunteerLove Little Free Libraries and supporting book access!Have access to transportation to visit local booksellersOrganizedGreat communication skillsPolite and friendlyLive in the US
