Who We Are

Gateway Domestic Violence Services was founded in 1979 as an emergency shelter to serve adults and their dependents of all races, ages, genders and ethnicities in a domestic crisis. Over the past 44 years, Gateway has expanded its services beyond immediate shelter to address the growing needs of the community and increased incidences of domestic violence (DV).

Today, we provide a highly effective combination of safe shelter and comprehensive services to adults their dependent children and their pets fleeing domestic violence. Our first shelter in the City of Aurora still exists and remains the only 24/7 safe and confidential shelter for domestic violence survivors in the City of Aurora and Arapahoe County. As such, Gateway fills a vital and unduplicated need in the service area.

Our mission remains the same: to prevent and eliminate intimate partner violence through counseling, residential care, legal advocacy, and empowering people for social change.

Our vision is as follows:

  1. To provide quality services in a safe and confidential environment for all adults and children who are victims of domestic violence.
  2. To promote community awareness through training, education, and networking in order to achieve the community’s involvement and support on issues of domestic violence.
  3. To empower adults and children in developing violence-free lives through crisis intervention, advocacy, and support services.
  4. To promote accessibility to all adults and children who are victims of domestic violence through outreach to traditionally silenced groups.
  5. To affect social change by evaluating and challenging attitudes and policies that promote violence against intimate partners and their children; and
  6. To effectively utilize volunteer services in all levels of the organization

Gateway’s wraparound services – a key to long term survivor success - treat both the immediate crises and long-term emotional needs of DV victims. The focus of all of our programs is to support the healing of those impacted by DV and provide hope for a future free from violence. They include a 24/7 crisis hotline, emergency and extended stay shelter, non-residential counseling, court advocacy and community engagement.
